In 2001 the Countryside Commission (now merged into Natural England) issued the following statement; "The primary purpose of (AONB) designation is to conserve and enhance natural beauty." The Commission also stated that in pursuing the primary purpose, an AONB should take account of the needs of agriculture, forestry and other rural industries as well as the economic and social needs of local communities. CPRE's own aims coincide closely with those of the AONB. Consequently, CPRE in Shropshire, where 804 square kilometres in the south of the County fall within the Shropshire Hills AONB, works very closely with the AONB team and has built up a very positive working relationship with the AONB manager and his colleagues. The AONB Partnership is the formal structure behind the AONB. The Partnership has 38 members of which CPRE is one. Our representative is Claire Cox. Further Information |
