Our modern lives are full of noise. Traffic growls past our houses and aircraft drone overhead. Noise disturbs us, adds to stress and erodes health. CPRE is working to promote tranquillity, through reducing noise and other forms of pollution and urban intrusion.

In August 2008, the Noise Association launched a report that demonstrated that traffic noise in rural areas is much worse than the Government admits. The report identifies the expansion of roads, motor traffic levels and speeds as the main reasons for a huge expansion of noise pollution and consequent loss of tranquillity in rural communities and the countryside. In response to the report CPRE called on the government to:

  • Reduce motor traffic speeds, which would also quickly reduce carbon emissions
  • Enforce speed limits on rural roads
  • Subject any road expansion proposal to exacting tests of its environmental effects, including the impact on tranquillity in the countryside.
