As development and transport pressures on Shropshire increase, the county's landscape is becoming less tranquil. Tranquillity is one of those things you tend not to miss until its gone. People can become gradually accustomed to noise, light and air pollution, and the intrusion of developments into previously quiet landscapes. As some point, though, people look around and realise that it has become intolerable and that all semblance of rural quiet and calmness has gone.

Shropshire is the ninth most tranquil area in a ranking of 87 local authorities in England. CPRE is working to protect this tranquillity through:

  • developing methods that planners can use to measure and manage intrusion and pollution (see our national website)
  • scrutinising planning applications, objecting or asking for modifications to reduce the impact on tranquillity
  • campaigning to reduce light and noise pollution
