Commenting today on the release of “The Rural Services Manifesto: 2010 and Beyond” by the Rural Services Network, Andy Boddington, Vice Chairman of CPRE Shropshire said: “We welcome this manifesto. It contains a lot of sensible statements. It is time to stop just talking about the countryside and to start reviving it. We fully support the Rural Services Network in telling the government and local councils that the needs of rural areas are different from those of cities. It is vital, for example, that rural areas do not miss out as new broadband services are introduced, but telecommunication companies have always been laggard in rolling out new technologies to remote communities. Many areas in the remoter areas of Shropshire still do not have, or have very poor, broadband access. The report calls for much more to be done to support rural shops and pubs, and to build affordable rural housing. We fully agree. Shropshire has seen too many pubs, post offices and shops close and people have to travel further and further to access essential services. We urgently need more rural housing for people who work in the countryside. Politicians and policy makers must pay attention to this report.” Further Information |
