Bishops Castle Biomass Power Plant

4 August 2009: Biomass plant approved CPRE Shropshire is very disappointed that the planning inspector has given the go ahead for the Bishop’s Castle biomass plant in the face of near universal local opposition. Andy Boddington said: “This decision shows that the government’s claims that it listens to the views of local communities are simply hot air. The scientific case against a biomass plant in this location has also been ignored. Renewable energy will make an important contribution to tackling climate change but it should not be built at the cost of the local environment and quality of life.” May 2009 The public inquiry has ended. The Secretary of State, Hazel Blears, has decided that an Environmental Impact Statement is not required. A decision by the Planning Inspectorate is expected at the end of July. November 2008 CPRE Shropshire welcomes the decision by the Planning Inspectorate to hold a public inquiry into the planning application. Representations must be submitted to the Inspectorate by 31 December 2008. April 2008 CPRE South Shropshire objects to this intrusive development at the edge of the AONB. We are concerned about the impact on landscape character of the crops grown for the plant and the potential impact on biodiversity, wildlife and tourism. This is inappropriate at the edge of an AONB.
