The great bulk of our energy supply produces greenhouse gases. Failure to curb these emissions could lead to dangerous levels of global warming that threaten lives and livelihoods, as well as the English landscape.

CPRE is concerned about the potential damaging impact of some types of energy generation on the landscape. We engage with the energy debate through:

  • Planning. The scale and location and developments in the energy sector must be planned so as to cause minimum damage to the landscape and wildlife.
  • Building design. We insist on high standards of energy use in dwellings and industrial buildings, and support methods of installing energy in existing homes and offices.
  • Transport. Reducing demand for emissions as well as new infrastructure. We encourage greater provision of public transport, compact estate development and consumption of local foods to reduce transport needs. Taxation of aviation fuel would also reduce demand.
  • Equipment. We support continued development of energy efficient tools and electronic equipment. TVs, stereos, videos and DVD players generate 3.1 million tonnes of CO2 a year—just through leaving them on standby when not in use.

CPRE Shropshire Policy Position Statement 2
Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy

CPRE Shropshire recognises the need for energy conservation and renewable energy development as a key contributor to our future sustainability, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and climate change impact.

CPRE Shropshire will push for energy efficiency to be built into proposed developments for housing, retail and industry. We will urge that the Building Research Establishment's 'eco-standards' for energy efficiency be incorporated by all developers at an 'excellent level'.

CPRE Shropshire will consider each renewable energy proposal on its own merits. We will seek demonstration that impacts on the landscape and on neighbours have been minimised and energy generation maximised. Where these impacts are judged severe, we will work with other groups to oppose the scheme. Potential impacts of particular concern are:

  • Wind turbines, visual and noise impact
  • Biofuels, impact of the loss of productive agricultural land
  • Waste-to energy plant, impact on air pollution and traffic levels.
