July 2009

CPRE Shropshire welcomes the decision to refuse permission for this intrusive wind farm (BBC News).

Vivian Hancock campaigned against the wind farm on behalf of CPRE Shropshire. He said:

We welcome this decision. The site was completely unsuitable for a wind farm. The landscape would have been ruined by the erection of these huge turbines and nearby residents would have had to put up with noise and shadow flicker from the spinning blades. It is time for the scramble to build wind farms anywhere and everywhere to stop. We should be concentrating on insulating housing and putting greater effort into offshore wind and wave power.

September 2008

CPRE Shropshire strongly objects to the proposal by Nuon UK Ltd to site seven turbines at Lower Farm, Norton-in-Hales, Bearstone, near Market Drayton. We are concerned that:

  • The type of turbine has not been specified: approval of a proposal which is significantly unspecified in some way would set an undesirable precedent.
  • The data in the Environmental Statement underestimates many factors of considerable importance in determining a planning application.
  • The proposals will lead to excessive adverse effects on the environment and on nearby residents, especially noise, shadow flicker and landscape impacts — the introduction of strong verticals into a horizontal landscape, the introduction of movement into a still landscape, and the introduction of metallic engineered forms into a natural landscape.
  • Inadequate treatment of within-project cumulative effects.
  • An inadequate decommissioning process.

Our objection was submitted, along with many others, to North Shropshire District Council Development Control Committee. At the beginning of September the Committee rejected the planning application due to the visual impact of the site and the unacceptable adverse impact on the setting of listed buildings.

3 October 2008

Nuon UK has announced that it will appeal the decision.
