Press Release 6 January 2009

The government issued Food 2030, its national food strategy on 5 January.

Katy Anderson, local food and transition town representative for CPRE Shropshire says:

"We welcome the government's efforts to take food supply seriously, but this strategy is far too weak on reducing food miles and strengthening the local economy. Food is not just a global industry supplied through supermarkets chains. The government must work harder to ensure that more of our food is locally sourced and that people are encouraged to grow more of their own. It is unbelievable that this food strategy does not champion allotments and community gardens which have the potential to give many more people access to low-cost, fresh food. Local food is also better for the local economy and the environment, and helps support local farmers who help keep Shropshire's countryside beautiful."

"It is vital that we grow more of our food in Britain and use more local supplies, so that our food supply will be more sustainable in future years when oil will get scarcer and impacts of climate change will increase. This is a strategy that is far to dominated by how food has been supplied, not how it needs to be supplied in the future."

CPRE Shropshire is currently seeking volunteers to help with its project to map and strengthen local food supplies in and around Shrewsbury. It will be holding an informal meeting for potential volunteers at Coach and Horses Pub, Swan Hill, Shrewsbury, 7.30 pm Tuesday 19th January. Further details from Catherine Webster on 07739 332798.
