CPRE Shropshire is bring a national local food project to Shrewsbury. Over the next five months, CPRE and its volunteers will be exploring the network of local foods in and around the town and find ways to strengthen the links between local producers and consumers.

Our aim is to reconnect people and land through local food by increasing access to fresh, healthy, local food with clear, traceable origins. A local food web connects people who buy, sell, produce and supply food in an area. The people, businesses, towns, villages and countryside in the web depend on each other, and this interdependence benefits their livelihoods, their quality of life and the quality of places.

Katy Anderson is leading the project for CPRE Shropshire. Katy says:

“This is an excellent and timely opportunity to investigate and improve local food provision in and around Shrewsbury. Local food is vitally important. Its better for the local economy and the environment, and supports local farmers who help keep Shropshire’s countryside beautiful. The timing couldn’t be better. The transition town movement in gathering pace in Shrewsbury, with the aim of preparing the town for the challenges of climate change and peak oil.”

Catherine Webster, CPRE’s West Midlands Regional Coordinator for the project says:

“This is a fantastic opportunity to develop and strengthen links in the local food network, including those between producers, suppliers and retailers, right through to those of us who’d like to buy and eat more local food. The Mapping Local Food Webs project will help to bring all the strands together. Getting the community involved and making the most of people’s local knowledge are central to the project. We hope that people from all walks of life will take part.”

CPRE Shropshire is now calling for volunteers to help with the project which will run from January to May 2010.
