Details

This is an exciting opportunity to play a role in a national Mapping Local Food Webs project; the main part of Campaign To Protect Rural England’s (CPRE’s) work to protect the countryside through local foods and part of the Making Local Food Work Programme.

We are looking for people with a passion and interest in local food to interact with and interview shoppers in towns and cities across England, including Shrewsbury.

Volunteers will use a questionnaire prepared by Coventry University to build a picture of consumer attitudes, habits and knowledge in relation to local food. This information will complement other surveys and questionnaires and events targeted at shop keepers, farmers, growers and other local food producers in these areas.

The work is flexible in days and hours, we would like to find people to help with this work between 4th January and May 2010.

Suggested activities

The volunteer will assist a CPRE Regional Co-ordinator working within their region with the following tasks:

  • Work with a team of local people to interview food shoppers
  • Make decisions about where to carry out the questionnaire in your town or city
  • Keep in regular contact with volunteers working on other elements of the project and update the team on your progress
  • Be prepared to work in the fresh outdoors
  • Report back your findings to the regional coordinator and other teams within the project

Background

The Campaign to Protect Rural England exists to promote beauty, tranquillity and diversity of rural England by encouraging the sustainable use of land and other natural resources in town and country

The Mapping Local Food Webs project is a strand of the ‘Making Local Food Work’ programme, a collaborative partnership of organisations led by the Plunkett Foundation. CPRE is leading the Mapping Local Food Webs project within the programme and will work in close collaboration with Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming

This project aims to give people the materials and support they need to ‘map’ – research and record - their local food networks or webs in their towns and cities across England. The findings should increase understanding of the links between producers and consumers, and the impact those links have on people in urban and rural areas.

By finding out how local food webs work in individual towns and cities, this project will encourage understanding of local food webs and promote support for local food production and better availability.

To really understand our local food webs we need to go out into your town or cities and ask consumers about their experience of local food.

Please send a cv and covering letter, outlining relevant experience and your interests to Catherine Webster at catherinew@cpre.org.uk.

Volunteering at CPRE

Reasonable out of pocket expenses will be paid within the approved expenses limits for:

  • Travel expenses incurred on CPRE business (i.e travel to meetings or site visits)
  • Cost of lunch when working 5 or more hours per day
  • Materials for project promotion, support and stationary will be provided by CPRE

This is an exciting new opportunity to play a role in a national Mapping Local Food Webs project; the main part of Campaign To Protect Rural England’s (CPRE’s) work to protect the countryside through local foods.

We are looking for people with a passion and interest in local food to interview suppliers in the food chain (farmers, growers, other local food producers, processors, wholesalers) in the surrounding areas of Shrewsbury. Volunteers will use an interview tool prepared by a University research team to build up an environmental profile of farmers, growers and local food producers and processors in the area where you live. This information will complement other surveys and questionnaires targeted at shop keepers, consumers and residents in your town or city.

The work is flexible in days and hours, we would like to find people to help with this work between January and May 2010.

Suggested activities

The volunteer will assist a CPRE Regional Co-ordinator working within their region with the following tasks:

  • Work in a team to identify which farmers, growers and local food producers supply food to the food outlets (shops, cafes, box schemes, farmers markets etc) in your town
  • Identify farmers, growers and local food producers to interview about their farming and production practices
  • Arrange and carry out interviews with farmers, growers and local food producers
  • Keep in regular contact with volunteers working on other elements of the project and update the team on your progress
  • Reporting back your findings to the Regional Coordinator and other teams within the project

We are looking for people with a passion and interest in local food to help plan, publicise and facilitate a series of events and workshops for the Mapping Local Food Webs project in Shrewsbury.

We will be holding a series of workshops and events to promote the project and find out more about the social, environmental and economic impact local food has in each town. We will run workshops for residents which examine and explore the local food network where you live and engage key people in your area to attend public events and meetings about the project.

The work is flexible in days and hours, we would like to find people to help with this work between January and May 2010.

Suggested activities

The Voluntary Events Planner will assist a CPRE Regional Co-ordinator working within their region on the following tasks:

  • Plan, organise, publicise and attend meetings, including speaking at events (if willing)
  • Plan and facilitate public workshops on local food
  • Facilitate and record discussions at meetings
  • Arrange venues and refreshments
  • Record numbers and contact details of attendees, in line with data protection policies
  • Keep in regular contact with the Regional Coordinator to report back on progress and any issues that arise
