Huntington Lane: Open Cast Coal Mine

7 October 2009 The Campaign to Protect Rural England in Shropshire says that it is shocked by the decision today of the Secretary of State for Communities, John Denham MP, to allow a massive opencast coal mine below the Wrekin on the edge of Telford. The Huntington Lane open cast mine has been approved in the face of strong opposition from the local council and nearby residents who will now suffer noise and dust pollution. The mine will destroy 230 acres of greenfield land, part of which lies within the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.Minerals spokesman for CPRE Shropshire, Vivian Hancock, said: "This decision is shocking. The damage the open cast mine will cause to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is unacceptable. The Inspector argues that such damage is to a small area and temporary. That description could apply to many hoped for developments in the AONB, including wind farms. There is a danger that this decision has opened the doors for anyone who wants to nibble away at Shropshire's protected landscapes. The government has also relaxed the noise restrictions slightly. Both noise and dust criteria need to be strengthened to protect local residents." January 2008 CPRE Shropshire has strongly objected to the application for an open cast coal mine adjacent to the Wrekin, Lawley, Telford. We are concerned that:
In an age when we are seeking to reduce our carbon emissions, quarrying new coal is inappropriate. This site also lies in the area of the Wrekin Forest, vital green space on the edge of the Telford conurbation. The public inquiry will open on 28 April 2009 (BBC report). Further Information |
