27 May 2010: CPRE Shropshire welcomes the decision to reject poultry units at Little and Great Ness Countryside campaigners today welcomed the decision by the Strategic Planning Committee of Shropshire Council to reject both applications for massive broiler sheds at Little and Great Ness. Andy Boddington, Chairman of CPRE Shropshire says: “Planners today made the right decisions to protect what they themselves say is the county’s greatest asset—its natural and historic environment. The proposed sheds were far too large for the location. Views from The Cliffe and surrounding countryside would have been badly affected. The units would have led to unacceptable overnight traffic through tight country lanes and tranquil villages. Neither applicant had managed to satisfy environmental rules. The planning committee rejected the units against their own officers’ advice and these were absolutely the right decisions on planning grounds.” Andy continues: “This was never a battle by Nimbys to protect their back yards. It was a campaign to preserve what is best about Shropshire. Its beauty, tranquillity, history and ecology." 24 May 2010: CPRE says council planners must reject the Ness poultry units The Campaign to Protect Rural England is calling on councillors to reject their planning officers’ advice and throw out plans for huge broiler units at Little Ness and Great Ness this Thursday. [1] Roger Carlyle, Chairman of CPRE Shrewsbury and Atcham District says: “These units are too large and in the wrong place. They will damage Shropshire’s greatest asset, its beautiful tranquil landscape. The surrounding roads are quite unsuitable for the large vehicles that will deliver feed and take chickens and manure from the sites.” More... August 2009: CPRE objects to applications 09/01583/FUL - Erection of four poultry broiler units and ancillary works CPRE Shrewsbury & Atcham District has expressed its great concern at the implications of the above applications. A large poultry unit situated less than 1 mile from the Nesscliffe Hill Country Park which is designated as a Site of Ecological, Geological and Physiographical Importance (LNC 7), and clearly visible from the designated area is unacceptable. Moreover, access via narrow country lanes is totally inadequate; the heavy vehicles required for transporting the poultry will inevitably create traffic problems. |
