Each of the government regions is overseen by a Regional Assembly, which is required to produce a regional plan to guide development for 20 years. The West Midlands Regional Assembly published its Regional Spatial Strategy (the formal name for the plan) in June 2004. The government immediately sought to change the plan and ordered a three phase review:

  • Phase One. Black Country. Completed.
  • Phase Two. Housing numbers, centres, employment land, centres, transport and waste. Ongoing. The Inspectors' report is awaited. More...
  • Phase Three. Critical rural services, culture/recreational provision, various regionally significant environmental issues and the provision of a framework for Gypsy and Traveller sites. More...

CPRE West Midlands and CPRE Shropshire are closely monitoring these developments and proposing changes to ensure that the county's character and rural environment are preserved.
