December 2009

In December 2009, Advantage West Midlands and Shropshire Council received a survey of shoppers in Oswestry town centre. The results show that shoppers do not want or need more supermarkets in the town. They desire more specialist shops, especially clothing. However, the retail applications currently being considered by Shropshire Council threaten to undermine the fragile economy of the town centre leading to a further loss of specialist shops.

Headline results

  • Over three-quarters of respondents (78%) do not think Oswestry needs a new supermarket
  • Four in five respondents (80%) feel that there is a good variety of independent shops in the town centre
  • When street interviewees shop in a rival town, over six in ten (63%) are looking to buy clothes
  • More than nine in ten respondents (93%) think that shopping hours were convenient and meet their needs
  • A similar proportion (92%) think the shops are close enough to make a convenient shopping experience
  • The vast majority of interviewees (98%) say that they ‘generally feel safe’ when in the town centre
