Yesterday evening, (Tuesday 13 July), the Development Services Scrutiny Panel of Shropshire Council agreed to recommend to the full Council that no further work should be done on developing the NWRR.

Convenor of the No Way! Group Geoff Black "This is an excellent result. For years Shropshire Council and its predecessors have dreamed of this destructive road, diverting money from more sustainable and practical transport schemes. No one these days believes that the future for transport is driving roads through environmentally important landscapes. Freed of its obsession with this road, Shropshire Council can now concentrate on solutions that are good for the environment, that it can afford, and above all that will work.”

The NWRR would have been extremely damaging to important and beautiful landscapes and wildlife, carving up irredeemably the green wedge of the Old River Bed and building a huge bridge over the river at Shelton Rough. It would have had a huge impact on wildlife sites, including Hencott Pool, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Andy Boddington, Chairman of CPRE Shropshire said: “This is a good result for Shrewsbury and for Shropshire. The public were absolutely clear in their responses to the Council’s consultation that their priorities are improving public transport and cycle facilities, making life better for pedestrians and enhancing park and ride. Shropshire Council’s own plan for the next 20 years directs it to promote “quality public transport, cycling and walking, and help reduce car dependency.” We are calling on the Council to deliver this commitment by going one step further and striking this destructive and unnecessary road from their plans forever.”

In the Shropshire Council recent consultation, 65% of people responding wanted improvements to public transport, and to walking, cycling and park and ride facilities, compared to just 45% for the North West Relief Road.
