Coppice management training 2024

We will run another 2-day coppice management workshops in the autumn/winter of 2024.

Our tutor will again be Richard Thomason, of Wild at Westhope, and the woodland site is on Shropshire's wonderful Wenlock Edge.

The hands-on workshop will cover:

Woodland risks and hazards
Coppice systems 

Tools of the trade 

The coppice fall –  starting a fall  

Creating drifts – different methods  

The sweet cut, different methods 

Coppice types and species

Neglected, over stood, estimating age

Managing light – standard density 

Creating a coup rotation 

Dressing out

Coppice products 

Managing standards, selecting poll trees

Pest control – Deer management 

Coppice stock density 

Layering, stooling, planting, natural regen

Coppice grading system

Access and extraction 

Please note there will be a small charge this year for these workshops to help us cover costs: £40 per person (total) for the 2 day workshops. NB if the cost is genuinely difficult we will consider applications for free places - please email Sarah on - thank you
