Geology

Shropshire’s famous and diverse geology is a defining influence on the County’s unique landscape, industry and social history as well as its soils and ecology.

We are lucky in CPRE Shropshire to have a knowledgeable and enthusiastic geology member in Sally Green who also co-chairs our Oswestry District Group. Sally is a self-taught, highly enthusiastic amateur geologist with a life-long interest in geology, mineralogy and fossils.

Geology Talks

Sally has been giving popular online lectures on aspects of Shropshire's geology since 2020 (The Geology of Shropshire, The Ice Age in Shropshire, Mining in Shropshire, Quarries and Building Stones of Shropshire, and Vulcanism in Shropshire and Mid Wales.  Find out more about these and her 2026 online talk which will focus on the Fossils of Shropshire here.

Geology Walks 2026 - Centenary project

To celebrate our CPRE Centenary Year in 2026, we are delighted to be running a series of six varied geology walks around the county with Sally and Mike Streetly (Shropshire Geological Society).

With funding from our National Office this project will also create an interactive artwork and educational resource celebrating Shropshire's diverse geology. This will be used as part of two public walks, talks and creative workshop events for CPRE Shropshire’s Centenary programme.

Sally will collaborate with artists Andrew Howe and Molly Brown, who co-lead The Landing Project, a creative exploration of rural labour, the evolution of farming
