Sally Green (CPRE Oswestry) is Sally is a self-taught amateur with a life-long interest in geology, mineralogy and fossils. She has now given five annual online Geology talks on behalf of CPRE Shropshire and has covered the geology of Shropshire, the Ice Age in Shropshire, Mines, Quarries and Ancient Vulcanism in the county. The Fossils of Shropshire

Join us online for a fascinating dive into the amazing world of Shropshire's fossils.

​

In this online talk, Sally Green, CPRE Shropshire’s Geology Lead, takes a journey through time, looking at the evolution of selected species including graptolites, brachiopods and trilobites showing how these species - both marine and terrestrial - changed through time, and how this is borne out in the county’s fossil record.

​

The Mines of Shropshire

Shropshire's rich geology hosts many exploitable minerals and there is a long history of mineral mining and six coal fields in the county. In this talk, learn how ores and coal formed, how the mines changed the Shropshire landscape and settlements and what happened after they were worked out and abandoned.

Ancient Vulcanism in Shropshire and Mid Wales

Did you know that Shropshire and Powys are home to numerous ancient volcanic outcrops, giant intrusions and rare igneous rocks, such as picrite, used by Paleolithic tribes to fashion axes? Join us for this, the fifth talk in Sally Green’s fascinating annual geology series, to hear how processes of ancient vulcanism from different eras have shaped our landscape and affected the economy in our county.

The Ice Age in Shropshire

Shropshire stands right at the southern end of the last Ice Age ice cap, which had a profound effect on our landscape.

 

Sally Green talks about some of the dramatic climatic changes in the last two million years and the effect of ice movement on the formation of our county’s topography.

 

This is a follow-up evening to Sally’s highly popular talk on Shropshire Geology in 2021.

The Quarries and Buildings Stones of Shropshire

After a brief recap of her original Geology talk, Sally goes on to explain the importance of the base geology to the built environment in Shropshire.

 

Every village would have had its quarry in the past and so the buildings 'grow' from the rocks and bricks from the clays.
