Geology walks 2026

As part of our Centenary celebrations in 2026, CPRE Shropshire has funding to run a year long geology project. This will include six geology walks, one per month from April 2026 to see and explore different important sites for geology in Shropshire.

The walks are free to attend (places will be limited) and are planned as follows (See our general walks poster here).

1: Sunday 19 April: PreCambrian - Pontesford & Earl’s Hill (bookings now open)
2: Saturday 16 May: Ordovician - Stiperstones & the Bog
3: Sunday 21 June: Silurian - Wenlock Edge
4: Saturday 18 July: Devonian & Carboniferous - Titterstone Clee
5: Sunday 16 August: Carboniferous - Llanymynech Rocks
6: Saturday 19 September: Permo-Triassic - Nesscliffe Hill & the Cliffe

Geology Walks 2026

Walk 1

Sunday 19 April, 10.30am - Pontesford & Earl’s Hill

​

This 2-mile walk will focus on the Pre Cambrian strata exposed in the Lyd Hole, a striking circular hollow on the Habberley Brook to the east of Pontesford Hill. There will be an option for the more energetic to walk a further 1.5 miles back over Earl’s Hill and examine the PreCambrian volcanic rocks that make up its core. From the top of the hill there will be an opportunity to appreciate Habberley Brook as an ice cut channel and see the former route of the stream to the north east. Mainly footpaths with some steep or rough sections. See the poster below (or a better pdf version here)
